This is Window's Session Manager Subsystem and should not be terminated or disabled. It does NOT use the network and runs in the background. There are cases where this applet can be infected.

This is ok as long as it's in the win32 folder. the SMSS.exe file is always located in the C:\\Windows\\System32 folder. If you find that there is an smss.exe located in another folder, then be aware that it is probably malware More information
