csrss.exe

File Name: csrss.exe
Usefulness Rating:
The csrss.exe is a process utilized by the Microsoft Client Server Runtime Server subsystem to manage a majority of the graphical instructions under Windows operating system. Its critical function is to control threading and Win32 console window features, such as creating and/or deleting threads, and implementing some portions of the 16-bit virtual MS-DOS environment. Threading is where the application splits itself into multiple simultaneous running tasks. Threads supported by csrss.exe are different from processes in that threads are commonly contained within the process, with various threads sharing resources within the same process. The Win32 console is the plain text window in the Windows API system (programs can use the console without the need for image display).

This is the user-mode portion of the Win32 subsystem (with Win32.sys being the kernel-mode portion). Csrss stands for client/server run-time subsystem and is an essential subsystem that must be running at all times. Csrss is responsible for console windows, creating and/or deleting threads, and some parts of the 16-bit virtual MS-DOS environment.

My csrss.exe is in /??/C:WINDOWS/system/32. What is the signficance of the /??/ prefix? None of my other Win Sys 32 file seem to have it. Does this make it dangerous?

This is the main executable for the Microsoft Client/Server runtime server subsystem. This process manages most graphical commands in Windows. If it's NOT located in C:\\Windows\\System32, it's probably malware.
