The Smtray.exe process is the system tray icon for Compaq/ADI SoundMAX integrated digital audio controller. It is installed with the drivers for soundcards or onboard sound based on Analog Devices' chipsets. It is used to control basic sound and mixer functions and turn off this program through MSCONFIG.
Recommendation:
The Smtray.exe process is not an essential file to the system performance. Disabling it or enabling it is down to the user's options.
