The csrss.exe is a process utilized by the Microsoft Client Server Runtime Server subsystem to manage a majority of the graphical instructions under Windows operating system. Its critical function is to control threading and Win32 console window features, such as creating and/or deleting threads, and implementing some portions of the 16-bit virtual MS-DOS environment. Threading is where the application splits itself into multiple simultaneous running tasks. Threads supported by csrss.exe are different from processes in that threads are commonly contained within the process, with various threads sharing resources within the same process. The Win32 console is the plain text window in the Windows API system (programs can use the console without the need for image display).

This process should be treated as suspicious if there are two instances running. Always take note of the process location when trying to determine whether or not the process is required or malicious. This Windows component should be located in your Windows System directory ie: something similar to C:\Windows\System32\csrss.exe

This is a necessary windows service and should always be running. Csrss stands for client/server run-time subsystem and must be running at all times for stable operation to continue.
*WARNING* If you find it outside of the folder, c:\windows\system32\ then it's most likely malware and is possibly a trojan!

csrss.exe IS AN ESSENTIAL component on ALL windows platforms, block, remove or end it & you WILL suffer the B.S.O.D. Read Rich reiss & CSalkeld's entries above and take note! Some opinions here will cause you system failure if you follow their advice (maybe they work for apple?!)
